Creativity & Aesthetics

Well-developed and applicable in many projects to come

Level of Development During My Bachelor

Past

Starting my study at the University of Eindhoven, I was already somewhat acquainted with graphic design thanks to Kilojoule Network. This provided me with basic skills which allowed me to think out of the box and create innovative graphic designs. Yet, what became apparent during the first year was that these skills were on a very low level as I struggled to break free from already existing ideas, concepts, and solutions. This inhibited the creation of truly out-of-the-box concepts during my earlier design projects. As a result, I understood that I had to become more skillful in divergent thinking and that I needed to develop techniques that allowed me to generate, select and refine innovative ideas. The course Aesthetics of Interaction did precisely that, as it introduced me to techniques such as quick and dirty prototyping, interaction relabeling, and the Forger framework. Accordingly, this experience paid off immediately, as it encouraged me to apply these techniques in many following projects. Although Aesthetics of interaction provoked my creativity in aesthetics to a certain extent, the course Tectonics and Materiality had truly pushed my sense of aesthetics to the next level. It taught me how to take a critical attitude towards aesthetic quality and challenged me to express the nature of objects through semantics like materiality, color, shape, and feel. Since then, valuing my designs through these semantics has been a frequent routine during my design projects.

Even though I do want to bring my competence in Creativity & Aesthetics to a higher level, I truly believe my skill has seen great improvement during my bachelor's studies.

Aesthetics of Interaction: explorations that resulted from various ideation techniques

Tectonics and Materiality: visualizing opposites

Tectonics and Materiality: combining design semantics to abstract objects. The gold-colored object represents a massive, light, and hard object. The blue colored object represents a hollow, heavy, and soft object.

Other activities that contributed to my development

Concept creation. Design projects: Project 1, Project 2, Project 3. Elective: Design for Debate. USE course: Innovation by Design. Major course: Aesthetics of Interaction, User-centered Design.

Aethetics. Design projects: Project 1, Project 2, Project 3. Elective: Tectonics and Materiality. USE course: Innovation by Design. Major course: Aesthetics of Interaction, User-centered Design. Extracurricular activities: Kilojoule Network

Present

During my Final Bachelor project, I devoted much time to the ideation and selection of ideas. Through methods like brainwriting, rapid ideation and quick-and-dirty prototyping, and adopting different perspectives, I managed to generate, select and refine many concepts. On top of that, I paid much attention to the details of the final prototype and presentation, and concentrated on the quality of the form.
