Hello

I focus on (re)imagining the world around us by exploring possible and/or probable futures, and aim to collectively define a preferable future that is sustainable, durable, and most important, desirable. In my works, I look at complex environmental and societal issues that require intricate solutions. As a result of the numerous projects I completed, I formed a conscious awareness of social, political, and cultural issues, and have built an expertise in creative problem-solving.

My Identity

During my study, I discovered that I have a big interest in social-cultural and social-environmental challenges. Particularly, I am interested in the role the designer in these challenges and how his/her designs can initiate public debate to collectively imagine and define new ways of living.

I see myself as an emphatic and critical designer with clear strengths in contextual and conceptual thinking. I am always curious to discover the unknown and eager to learn. I can quickly adapt to a new environment and acquire new skills and knowledge. Skills that enable me to analyze challenges from different perspectives. Furthermore, I am a social person, able to connect with others, and capable of identifying the needs of different stakeholders. Also, I do recognize people's strengths and will encourage team members to make the best use of them.

In my design projects, I feel most confident creating early-stage concepts. By that, I mean brainstorming and ideating concepts through sketching and low-fidelity prototyping with the project context in mind. This is also where my curiosity comes into play. I immerse myself in the context of the project and try to map out the design challenge as it allows me to decide what is important to focus on and what is not.

I strongly believe that passion must be a key driver for bringing a project to a successful conclusion. Also, the ‘Why’ should be a critical factor of a design project or any other undertaking per se. In my projects, this is reflected by the fact that I spend much time on defining a project vision and mission, but also sketch the aim of a project with practical feasibility in mind. That is not to say that I will not allow my intuition and feelings to influence my design decisions. In fact, I use my creativity and imagination to create innovative concepts before I move on to the practicalities

My Vision

Anthropogenic climate change is slowly, but steadily, disrupting the fundamental natural systems that keep our planet in a balanced state (Rockström, J., 2010). Destabilization of these systems not only threatens nature’s ecosystems, but is also able to disrupt our society massively, magnifying societal problems such as poverty, injustice, inequality, violence, and social insecurity, leaving our civilization in an unsafe, unfair, and unhealthy state (Froese & Schilling, 2019; Theisen, 2017).

Having said that, I strongly believe we should address the industries that impact our environment the most. One such industry is the clothing industry, which accounts for more than 10% of the global greenhouse emission, outnumbering the emission of all aviation and maritime shipping combined (EPRS, 2017). Fortunately, initiatives for a more environmentally friendly clothing industry are being taken. Examples are Fashion SWITCH, a collaborative project that encourages fashion retailers to switch to suppliers with renewable energy credentials, and fashion brands like Patagonia who advocate for a circular fashion economy. There are even institutions like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation that advocate for slow-fashion initiatives like clothing rental and resale. Unfortunately, for these initiatives to gain traction, a significant switch in customer behavior and attitude towards clothing is needed (Natural Climate Change 8, 2018).

This is where design comes to play. I believe design can and should be used as a tool to systemically change current practices into longstanding future practices. By (re)imagining the world around fashion through exploring and demonstrating possible and/or probable futures, and collectively defining a preferable clothing industry that is sustainable, durable, and most important, desirable, I imagine a world in which we can cohesively embrace the cultural and societal benefits of clothing in an environmentally friendly and responsible way.
